Roquetas de Mar is an ancient city, once
populated by fishermen and salt miners.
It was founded by the Phoenicians and
during the Roman domination was known as
Turania which currently is called
Torrequebrada de los Bajos. Numerous
archeological remains have been located
in this area. The Roman town was moved
to its current location after a flood
destroyed the old site. Salt mining
began during the Muslim era. The
acquisition of salt as well as fishing
constituted the city's economic base
until recently. Irrigation and
greenhouses converted the surrounding
fields into magnificent, fertile gardens.
In the second half of this century,
tourism was introduced to this beautiful
zone and visitors now come to the area
year-round.
Roquetas de Mar is located on the
ample plain at the foot of Gádor Sierra
and is today a tourist hot spot of great
importance. 40 minutes from Almeria
airport, a very popular resort set
against a beautiful mountain backdrop
with a fine, uncrowded, sandy beach
stretching for many miles. Although
modern, it still preserves its calssic
Spanish charm and authentic atmosphere.
With many excellent restaurants serving
mouthwatering Spanish specialities, as
well as lively bars, shops and a
bustling fishing harbour, Roquetas has
something for everyone.

Roquetas de Mar, Playa Serena and the
Costa de Almeria not only offers a
relaxing atmosphere to enjoy your
holiday but has much more to offer the
adventurous. Visit the many natural
parks such as the Cabo de Gata with its
beautiful coves and beaches, or the
Sierra Nevada with its snow capped peaks
and Ski resort. Go Wild in the West and
visit the Tabernas Desert, home of the
Spaghetti Westerns and famous for films
such as; The good, the bad and the ugly,

Roquetas de Mar is the next stop on our route along
the western Almerian coastline. Many civilizations
since Prehistoric times have been attracted by this
land and have settled here. From its Muslim past,
Roquetas proudly offers the Torre del Castillo de
Santa Ana. A sheltered marina, which extends on from
the fishing port, offers many possibilities for
maritime sport lovers. Close by the marina, an
extensive complex has been built, with attractive
buildings which blend with the environment, where
the overriding impression one gets is of the white
walls splashed with bright colours. An attractive,
full-size golf course serves as the ideal complement
to a long beach with its promenade, leading to a
fully equipped tourist complex.

To the left of the west-bound road, we find the
Reserva Natural de Punta Entinas, which in summer is
home to a wide variety of migratory birds. Now the
road rises a few metres in order to give us a
splendid view of Almerimar, with its golf course in
the foreground and the marina behind. Yet again, an
endless array of hotels and restaurants offer us the
possibility to relax, taking up water sports,
tennis, golf and many other activities.
Beautiful beaches such as Guardias Viejas, Balerma
and Balanegra, lead to Adra, a town of Phoenician
origin which enjoyed a golden age with the Romans.
