of the vehicles. Courses are held to teach the next generation of craftsmen.
HISTORY:
Known from antiquity, it has many archaeological sites like the Cerro de las
Viñas (Hill of the Vines), town of the Bronze Age, declared of international
interest;
The Fuentecica,
Spanish necrópolis where we find famous Leon de Coy (sculpture); The Villar,
where the sculpture of the Roman God Mercury appeared
After
Reconquista, Alfonso X,( the Wise Man), Lorca castle was destroyed. In the XVIII
century Coy was the third most important town of the municipality after Lorca
and Porto Lumbreras having a convent.
Their lead and
silver mines being exhausted, and with the lack of communication, it has been
forgotten and left behind, to become the quiet area we know today.
This
representation of Mercury originally occupied a niche in a small
sanctuary(Lararium) in Coy. The figure represents the protector of commerce,
holding a Marsupium on his right arm and the symbol of right in his left hand.
His superiority
is shown by the wings on his head. (Archeological Museum of
Lorca)
